About Cowpea

Also know as Blackeyed Peas, Cowpeas can produce 100-150 ponds of nitrogen per acre if properly innoculated. Can be a good soil builder and provide good erosion control. They show excellent heat and drought tolerance which can make for a good summer fallow cover. Works well with buckwheat if more weed control is desired and not as much desire for nitrogen production.  Photo courtesy of extension.org.
